Sustainability assessment considering improvements in maintenance and service stages
At this point, the analysis will provide with information for technical and sustainable decision- making on whether to assume different strategies of maintenance and repair, both in terms of economic impacts and environmental fallout, all of them quantified under the scope of emergy indicators and CO2 emissions.
Those different design criteria may affect the emergy values in one or the other case and therefore need to be evaluated for possible improvements in the sustainability indicators.
To obtain a sustainability evaluation of a breakwater project, based on previous emergy and CO2 emissions analysis, some indicator must be calculated. Previously emergy-based indicators included in the literature (Odum, 1996; Brown and Ugalti, 2002), as the emergy sustainable index (ESI), that compares the economic and environmental goods involved in the project with the yield obtained, will be calculated. In addition, new sustainability index will be proposed, based on the previous work of the research team (Molina-Salas et al, 2023).
Milestone 5.1: Emergy and CO2 emissions assessment for each strategy
Milestone 5.2: Comparative analysis of sustainability for each strategy
